The First Three Questions

Just like in professional sports, there is going to come a day when you have to take off the uniform. It doesn’t matter if you just made the roster or were an all-star. Some people join the military and serve for only one contract. Some make it a career lasting 20, 30, or 40 years but, there always comes the day when you have to take off the uniform.

In preparation for that day there are three questions that need to be answered:

  • What do you want to do?
  • Where do you want to do it?
  • When do you want to do it?

The earlier you think about these questions the better.

It is an honor to serve the United States of America in uniform and our military service members gain invaluable experience and skills from that service. The unfortunate part is that experience and skills are not necessarily easily transferable to the civilian corporate world. Or more specifically, it’s not easy to explain or translate that experience and skill into civilian terms. And, of course, sometimes experience and skill is not enough to land the job that you want.

Businesses don’t assume that if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

The earlier you answer these three questions the better prepared you will be. It is also helpful to think of things in the context of these three questions such as, networking. If you know what you want to do; know where you want to do it; and know when you will be available to do it, building a network relating to those three answers will be much more valuable.

Understanding these three things will also help you realize what educational and professional credentialing opportunities you should focus on and pursue while you are still active duty. Taking advantage of resources such as tuition assistance and service Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (COOL) understanding what your end goal is will prove much more valuable.

Now,

  • What do you want to do?
  • Where do you want to do it?
  • When do you want to do it?
