Go ahead and apply online - Military Talent Source, LLC.

Great. Awesome. You seem like you would be qualified… Go ahead and apply online… and, you’ll never hear from me again.

Why does every employment conversation seem to end with, “go ahead and apply online”?

In an “Inc.” article titled, “11 Interesting Hiring Statistics You Should Know”, written by Peter Economy it’s noted that:

On average, every corporate job opening attracts 250 resumes but, only 4 to 6 of these people will be called for an interview, and only 1 of those will be offered a job.

The “Wall Street Journal” notes that many large and midsize companies have turned to applicant-tracking systems to search résumés for the right skills and experience and the percentage of large companies that use ATS systems is in the high 90’s.

The same article does a good job explaining what these systems do. The tracking systems are programmed to scan for keywords, former employers, years of experience and schools attended to identify candidates of likely interest. Then, they rank the applicants. Those with low scores generally don’t make it to the next round.

For separating veterans you can see how this could prove to be a challenge.

Overcoming the online challenge? Networking…?

LinkedIn Influencer, Lou Adler, author of The Essential Guide for Hiring & Getting Hired writes that:

85% of critical jobs are filled via networking of some sort, being highly networked is essential for both the job seekers and for those seeking them.

Again, you could see how this presents a challenge for someone who has spent considerable time in military instead of the civilian corporate world.

There are no easy answers. Finding a job after the military is a job in and of itself. Yes, some people have no issues and would tell you that it was easy for them (myself included) but, they are the exception rather than the rule. When the exception is true I would be willing to bet that the individual spent a lot of time preparing to leave the service and/or was lucky enough to have a network offering support (myself included).

There aren’t any easy answers but, we are here to help.
